lyx is an advanced open source document processor. It produces high quality, professional output using LaTeX, but is far more than a front-end to LaTeX. No knowledge of LaTeX is necessary to use LyX, although it will give a user more power.

LyX is stable and fully featured. It has been used for documents as large as a thesis, or as small as a business letter. Despite its simple GUI interface (available in many languages), it supports tables, figures, and hyperlinked cross-references, and has a best-of-breed math editor.
Be sure to run "Option->Configure" if you have customized your LaTeX setup. The LyX Home Page has more information.
NOTE: This package was built with the MipsPRO 7.3 compilers. If you are running on IRIX 6.5.9 or earlier you must install the following patches (or their successors):Patches can be downloaded from http://www.sgi.com/support/patch_intro.html
- patch 3742 (5 MB) -- c++_eoe (includes libCio.so)
- patch 3911 (19 MB) -- compiler_eoe (except libmp)
